Getting the Word Out

We are trying to get the word out about the Agile-Carolinas. Our impression is that many people who would want to come do not know about us. And many people who would want to do Agile don't know about Agile. So....

We need your help. First, through "word of mouth" (or perhaps "word of email" is more used now). And then... Your efforts will help bring the people you want to this group.

We are grateful to Cory Foy for most of the following information. Please contribue by addng or clarifying. Frankly I need help in this area! Please volunteer. Later I will add/indicate what I am already doing (eg, where I am sending email notifications of our meetings).

Thanks, Joe

Thanks Alex for the great notes last night! As I mentioned to the group, I already have to do PR for CharJUG, so extending that to the CharLUG group will be no problem.

We had a good discussion on PR ideas and ways to promote the LUG. I wanted to reiterate them here and see if any others had any to throw in that we didn't come up with:

- Meetup.org. I checked their site and there doesn't appear to be a Charlotte Linux meetup outside of the Perl Mongers. I will get us registered on there this weekend.

- Create a press release for the new incarnation and board members. Send to news outlets including Charlotte Observer, News 14 Charlotte, Creative Loafing. I got the contacts already for those news outlets and someone (who also suggested a good article on writing press releases but whose name I forgot as soon as I got home) mentioned he would check with 6 News. Are there any others?

- Flyers (CompUSA, Office Depot, Vitality computers, other computer stores, Book stores)

- CPCC, UNCC, Gaston College - Flyers, talking with IT Departments, etc

- PBS Stations

- 90.7 (sponsor or volunteer pledge drives)

- Getting Email archives working

I will also speak with several recruiters I know to see how we can publicize that way. For example, I know they have new employee packets, maybe somehow getting an information sheet about us in there when appropriate, or at least reminding the recruiters to remind people of us.

I'm open to any other suggestions, tips, pointers, ideas, concepts, etc.

Cory

Thoughts of Michele Madore of APLN-Richmond:

I am going to call my contact at the Virginia Telcom Association to ask if I can post an invite to their group. I would also suggest that we find someone who knows someone at the PMI group and request to post an invite to their group as well. The other group I will contact is AITP, Association of Technology Professionals. I am on a volunteer committee there and they will probably let me do the same. Networking is the key to us getting some different individuals out to our meetings.

Suggestion by Bob Chapman to spread word across Carolinas FREE:

Somebody should probably make a standard-size (468x60) banner ad (plus 255 character description) for this site and add it to Top North and South Carolina Web Sites List.

http://www.carolinasites.com/

Also, signing this web site up for the Carolina Banner Exchange using same banner ad would surely help to inform more people and make this site just one click away to anyone interested.
